Each line represents the lifespan of characters in Stanley Kubrick's, 2001: A Space Odyssey.  The height is length of the movie, and the end of the line is a ratio of that character's death.

The line on the far left is Frank Poole.
The three lines on the far right is the crew that dies in stasis.
Second from the left is when HAL 9000 is disconnected.
The center line is Dave Bowman.  The expansion begins when he touches the monolith and ends when he becomes the Starchild.

​The background is shiny black to represent the monolith itself.
